Blue Screen (BSOD) on Windows: What It Means and How to Fix It

19 Sep 2026 · 5 min read

A blue screen (often called BSOD) means Windows hit an error it could not safely recover from, so it stopped to protect your data. It is a symptom, not the disease - the job is to find what caused it.

First: note the error message

Write down the text on the screen, for example MEMORY_MANAGEMENT, CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED or PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA. This is the biggest clue to the cause.

The 5 most common causes

1. Faulty RAM

Errors mentioning MEMORY are usually RAM. Symptoms include random crashes at different times. Reseating the RAM sticks or testing them one at a time often identifies a failing module.

2. Bad or outdated drivers

If the blue screens started right after installing new hardware or a Windows update, a driver is the likely cause - most often graphics or storage drivers. Rolling back or updating that driver usually fixes it.

3. Failing hard disk or SSD

If crashes come with slow performance, freezing or missing files, the drive may be failing. Back up your important files immediately, before troubleshooting anything else.

4. Overheating

Dust-clogged fans and dried thermal paste cause the CPU to overheat and the system to crash - usually while gaming or during heavy work. Cleaning and re-pasting solves this.

5. Corrupted Windows files

Improper shutdowns or an interrupted update can corrupt system files. Running sfc /scannow from Command Prompt (as administrator) repairs many of these.

Simple steps you can try

  1. Restart and see whether it happens again - one-off crashes are common
  2. Uninstall any software or hardware added just before the crashes began
  3. Run Windows Update fully
  4. Check the laptop is not overheating (very hot base, loud fan)
  5. Back up your important files now, not later

When to get it checked

If the blue screen repeats several times a day, appears during startup, or comes with clicking noises from the drive, stop using the machine and get it diagnosed - continuing risks your data.
