A laptop that will not switch on is one of the most common problems we see at our Vijayawada workshop. The good news: in many cases the fault is small and inexpensive to fix. Here are the seven causes we find most often, starting with the easiest.
1. Drained or dead battery
If the laptop has been unused for weeks, the battery can discharge so deeply that it will not start on battery alone. Plug in the charger, leave it for 30 minutes, then try again. If it starts only while plugged in, the battery needs replacing.
2. Faulty charger or DC jack
Check the charger LED. No light usually means a failed adapter. If the light is on but the laptop does not charge, the charging port (DC jack) may be loose or broken - a common fault on laptops that are plugged and unplugged daily.
3. Power drain / static charge
This simple trick fixes a surprising number of "dead" laptops: unplug the charger, remove the battery if it is removable, then press and hold the power button for 30 seconds. Reconnect and try again. This clears residual static charge.
4. Loose or failed RAM
If the power light and fan come on but the screen stays black, RAM is a likely culprit. A loose or failed memory module stops the laptop from completing startup. Reseating or replacing the RAM usually solves it.
5. Display or backlight failure
Shine a torch at the screen at an angle. If you can faintly see the Windows logo, the laptop is running - the backlight or screen has failed, not the machine.
6. Failed hard disk or SSD
If the laptop powers on but hangs on the logo or shows "No boot device", the drive may have failed. Do not keep restarting it repeatedly - that can make data recovery harder.
7. Motherboard fault
If none of the above helps, the fault is usually on the motherboard - often the power circuit. This needs chip-level diagnosis and is not a home repair.
What you should NOT do
- Do not keep pressing the power button repeatedly - it can worsen a drive fault.
- Do not open the laptop if it is under warranty.
- If you suspect liquid damage, do not switch it on. Bring it in immediately.
