Losing data is stressful - but in most cases the files are still there. What matters most is what you do in the first hour.
Stop using the device immediately
This is the single most important rule. When a file is deleted, the data usually still sits on the disk until something new overwrites it. Every minute you keep using the drive, you risk overwriting the very files you want back.
Signs your drive is failing
- Clicking or beeping sounds - a mechanical fault; switch it off at once
- Drive not showing in "This PC"
- "You need to format the disk" message
- Computer freezes when opening certain folders
- Very slow file copying
What NOT to do
- Do not format the drive, even if Windows asks you to
- Do not install recovery software onto the same drive - it can overwrite your data
- Do not open the drive casing - dust destroys the platters
- Do not put a clicking drive in the freezer (an old myth that causes more damage)
- Do not keep switching it on and off repeatedly
What can usually be recovered
We regularly recover data from:
- Accidentally deleted or formatted drives
- Corrupted partitions and RAW drives
- Hard disks not detected by the computer
- Laptops that will not start (files pulled off the drive)
- Pen drives and memory cards
When recovery is difficult
Physical destruction (fire, severe impact), drives that have been fully overwritten, or badly damaged platters may not be recoverable. An honest evaluation tells you quickly whether your data can be saved.
Protect yourself in future
Keep two copies of anything important - one on an external drive and one in cloud storage. Most data loss we see would have been painless with a simple backup.
