RAM is your short-term working space. Too little and the computer slows down badly when you open several things at once. Here is how much you actually need.
Quick recommendation
| What you do | RAM needed |
|---|---|
| Basic browsing, YouTube, billing software | 8GB |
| Office work with many tabs, Excel, Tally | 8-16GB |
| Gaming | 16GB |
| Video editing, design, virtual machines | 16-32GB |
4GB is no longer enough for comfortable use in 2026. Windows itself uses a large part of it, leaving little for your work.
Will more RAM make my computer faster?
This is the important question, and the honest answer is: only if RAM is the bottleneck.
- Yes, it helps if your computer slows down when many apps or browser tabs are open
- No, it will not help much if your computer is slow even with one app open - in that case the drive is usually the problem, and an SSD is the better upgrade
Tip: open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) and watch the Memory figure while working. If it sits above 80%, more RAM will help.
DDR3 vs DDR4 vs DDR5
These are generations of RAM and they are not interchangeable - DDR4 will not fit a DDR3 slot. Older laptops usually take DDR3, most current ones DDR4, and the newest DDR5. Always check what your machine supports before buying.
Things people get wrong
- Mixing very different speeds or brands can cause instability
- Many laptops have only one free slot - check before buying two sticks
- Some laptops have RAM soldered on and cannot be upgraded at all
- More RAM does not increase gaming FPS once you have enough - the graphics card matters more
